Caen is the capital of the Calvados department in Normandy, northwestern France. With a metropolitan population of around 270,000, it is one of Normandy’s most important cities, serving as a regional centre for education, healthcare, commerce, and culture.

Caen rose to prominence in the 11th century under William the Conqueror, who made it one of his principal cities before becoming King of England in 1066.

During World War II, Caen was a major objective after the D-Day landings. Much of the city was destroyed during the Battle of Caen in June and July 1944, before being rebuilt in the post-war years. Today, it combines historic architecture with modern urban planning.
